Specialist care for the critically ill
Camperdown Critical Care Consultants provides highly qualified Intensivists to the Chris O'Brien Lifehouse.
The clinical care provided by Intensivists includes day-to-day care of critically ill patients in the Intensive Care Unit, acute resuscitation of critically ill and unstable patients throughout the hospital, assessment of deteriorating patients on general wards, and care of the dying patient.
Care is a collaboration
In the Intensive Care Unit all care is a collaboration between Intensive Care Medical team — which will include both intensive care specialists and training doctors - and the Intensive Care nurses, and the attending medical, surgical , and other health teams.
The machinery of life support
As well as supervising the complex teamwork of the Intensive Care Unit, intensivists look after the machinery of life support in the ICU including mechanical ventilators, dialysis machines, catheters to safely give medications, monitoring of the body's vital signs and draining abnormal collections of fluids. They can also perform diagnostic tests with ultrasound machines.
